When i first started vb.net i designed a set of custom buttons and panel controls as my first project. The coding is pretty awful and very linear but if you'd like i can post the project and you can take a look?

Noone's going to eat a shiny apple if the core is rotten. I suggest getting the basics down first before you worry about fancy interfaces. A coloured button that doesn't do anything is pretty, but pretty useless.
