Error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instence Specified

This my problem... Please Someone Help me Solve This Problem.. I already Check Configuration Tools All in running.. before I try using sql its ok and still can open.. but when I connect on vb.net the problem same on vb.. then I uninstall back my sql express.. and install back.. when I tried problem same.. can some one help me step by step... sorry my English weak.. hope all understand.. 26/05/2013 my final presentation at college.. Are you trying to connect to an instance on your own machine or another machine?

my own machine.. im using Lenovo window 8 when I installed then I running sql express the server name blank.. so I put .\SQLEXPRESS for the server name.. 1 years ago im using other laptop Compaq window 7 I installed and I running the server name not blank.. automatic detect my server name.. so that way I confuse maybe windows 8 not Support SQL SERVER 2008?? that true.. someone have any idea's?
