VB Competition - Need Vital Functions etc

I am going to be involved in a VB competition in a couple of months, and i will need to know some vital and major functions and ways of doing things such as:

Splitting Strings
Opening a file, reading it, and taking lines and saving them as strings/integers
etc

If you have any ideas of cool functions that may be able to help me make several programs on the spot, this would be appreciated!
